Rather than watch from a distance, or slink away, or merely inspect a hand, I’ve taken to greeting this newcomer at her puntual 10:45 am round. My colleague still welcomes her as much as one would welcome a rabid dog, but then, she responds that way to other things as well, like drumming music, a visitor to clip the toes, a pup on another balcony, a shadow of a bird. Anything will send her to the far scratches of the closet.
