Nobuo Kubota at the AB series was part of the season 4 premiere. The sound poet performed to a house of over 4 dozen.
It was a delightful play of sounds. (There’s a video of his past performance here, mouth rhythms). Each piece had a distinct mood and sound set. It was easy to distinguish where one piece ended and began, unlike sets of some verbal poetry or radio songs.
There’s something emotive and joyful there, and extremely methodically executed. He has a precise timing. Finally, I can experience how sounds can be looped to make a good effect rather than something just dizzying and disconcerting clash of tracks.
He stood up, performed, no preamble blather or autobiographical, just the work. Rather lovely actually.
The next AB series readers are Jay MillAr & Shane Rhodes in the evening after the ottawa small press fair, Oct. 16.
